When Your Body Knows Before You Do
Sometimes stress doesn’t shout. It settles quietly into you, seeping into your muscles and bones. It doesn’t always come in sharp bursts. You might not notice it at first, but your body has been whispering warnings for hours, days… maybe even years.
There is no clear beginning or end.
Just a constant low hum of readiness beneath everything you do.
You hold your breath without realizing it, lungs paused mid-inhale, like you’re waiting for something to happen.
There’s a constant tension in your body that feels all too familiar…muscles locked, as if you’re expecting a hit that never comes.
You’re always hyper-alert, mentally scanning for danger in every shadow, every sound.
There’s a familiar tension behind your ears, a dull ache that pulses in time with your heartbeat.
Your chest feels tight, each breath more shallow than the last, as if the air isn’t quite enough.
Your stomach churns with each anxious thought,
the fear of imagined danger leaving a hollow, uneasy sensation in your gut.
Even rest isn’t rest.
You’re exhausted, bone-deep tired. But when you lie down, your mind refuses to power off.
Thoughts loop.
Muscles stay tense.
Sleep feels just out of reach.
Sometimes this lives in your body for months or years, running quietly in the background until it feels like the only “normal” you know.
This is anxiety.
Not an abstract idea, but a visceral experience.
Your body’s alarm system stuck in the “on” position, flooding you with emergency signals while you are just trying to make it through an ordinary day.
It’s not easy to step out of this constant readiness.
But it is possible.
With the right tools, practice and support, your body can learn safety again.
Your breath can feel free again.
And one day, you may notice that the stillness you once braced against
now feels like peace.
